About this Recipe

Growing up, refried beans were a staple food group in our family. We had a clay bean pot that had been passed from generation to generation on my dad’s side of the family. And my mom, being the amazing woman she is, learned how to make the most amazing refried beans from my dad’s mom, my grandma.

Sadly, I have yet to inherit the coveted, family bean pot. I also live in a camper. So, I converted this recipe to make refried beans in an Instant Pot as a quick and easy solution for when I’m craving some homemade refried beans.

The secret ingredient to delicious refried beans? Bacon drippings.

Ingredients

  • 1 lb, dry pinto beans
  • 5-6 cups, water
  • 1/4 cup, bacon dippings
  • 1 tsp, garlic powder
  • 2 tsp, Chicken “Better Than Bullion” or bullion of choice
  • Salt and Pepper to taste

Our Tips:

  • Play with spices. Add onion powder, chili powders, cumin, etc.
  • Add jalapeno or onion to Instant Pot when cooking.
  • Freeze and save for another day.
  • Bean and cheese tacos. Yes.

Step by Step Instructions

Step 1

Add dry beans, garlic powder, bullion, bacon drippings, water, pepper to Instant Pot.

Stir.

Step 2

Close Instant Pot, make sure Release Valve is closed.

Set Instant Pot to Pressure Cook Low for 1 hour.

Step 3

Once timer goes off, do not open Release Valve.

Let natural release until the metal float valve falls.

Step 4

One Release Valve has dropped, you’re ready to blend your beans.

You can use a fork, masher, blender or like us, an immersion blender. Super easy!

Note: If you have a lot of liquid left over, reserve some before blending so your beans don’t get too soupy. Slowly add the reserved liquid while blending beans until they reach desired consistency.

Step 5

In a pan, add 1 tbsp of oil or bacon drippings.

Transfer blended beans to pan and cook on low to medium heat for an additional ten minutes, stirring occasionally.

Salt and pepper to taste.

Step 6

Serve as a side dish, on nachos or, my favorite, bean and cheese tacos. 🙂

Enjoy!
